With all the discussion about what woman should grace American currency, I have not seen Angelina and Sarah Grimke mentioned. But listen up everyone. They should be considered, for their devotion both to the abolition of slavery and women’s rights. They had no role model to follow. They followed their conscience and dedicated their lives to their convictions.

I like the development of Handful but the Grimke sisters seemed to wain for me. It was just a simple formation of the Grimke sisters ultimately starting the feminist movement out of the abolitionist movement. I was expecting the lives of the Grimke sisters and the slaves be more intertwined within the story but each of the main characters developed separately from each other and were only brought together at some points in the story. It was a good read and I would recommend it.

Based on the true story of Sarah Grimké and her younger sister, Angelina and their struggle for equality for both women and African Americans. I had thought I would get a bit more into the history of their struggle but it was more about what their life may have been like. Still, it is an amazing story to think of rebelling against everything you grew up knowing and turning away from an easy life to one of hardship and being hated for your beliefs. I would recommend this to a friend.
