During their marriage, Macon and Sarah never really evolved as a couple and become one unit like other married couples. They were two distinct people: Macon had a fondness for method and order and it annoyed Sarah to no end. Their differences put a strain on their marriage but when their twelve-year old son is killed, it ruins them. After Macon and Sarah separate, Macon meets a woman named Muriel. She is extreme, unpredictable, and anything but orderly. Muriel falls for Macon but Macon misses hi ...more

While I was reading this, I thought it was so boring. I thought the characters were boring, especially Macon, the main character. And I never felt that I got to know the woman he began dating while he was separated from his wife. By the end, though, I was reading it a lot, partly just to get it done, but also because I wanted to know if he finally chose to be with Muriel, or if he stayed with his wife, Sarah. Another good one by Anne Tyler. I really enjoyed this. This was published in the middle 80’s. It was made into a movie I never saw. It’s about Macon. He and his wife Sarah, have just recently lost their son to a brutal but random crime. The tragedy takes a toll on their marriage and Sarah asks for a separation. Macon is a writer and travels all over the world as “The Accidental Tourist”. He writes travel guides for the working executive. After having some trouble with his dog, Edward, he seeks o ...more

I read this in high school because my parents had it hanging around the house. I liked it but it was definitely slow paced, as much of Tyler's work seems to be.

The main character is a travel writer who hates to travel and likes his secure little world. He meets a woman who is a dog trainer who is anything but predictable. He struggles between wanting the familiar and liking the new world he finds with her. I think I'd get more out of it if I were to read it now.
