This book was loooonnng even on audio book. It starts out really slow and drags on. I gave it four stars however based on the characters and the history. In the end I liked how it ended for the family. I was happy that the main character's father married Helen. I didn't quite understand why Helen had left. I was happy they were reunited. I also liked the book based on all the history and I would love to be a historian for a career if it paid well.

I finally finished The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and it took WAY too long! While the story was interesting and Kostova's descriptions of European cities were often lovely, I found the book unnecessarily wordy and not as gripping as I would have liked. And the ending? No idea what that was all about.... but I didn't like it at all.

I adored this book - - rich, interesting descriptions, especially of parts of Europe I know little about (Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey). I love the way it is written, which makes it very believable...which is saying something for a vampire book! I savoured this book, and enjoyed every page.

I confuse this book with Geraldine Brooke's "People of the Book" but Brooke's book was much better--I must assume--since I remember the plot. ...more
