I'd picked this book up without really paying attention to what the story was about (kept seeing it in the Hay bookstores and finally gave in and bought a copy). It turned out to be a pleasantly different version of the Dracula story, written in a similar manner to classic Stoker novel, told through verbal and written accounts of the different people involved. Finally finished this. I had to restart it and it took ages to work through. Bits were excellent and full of suspense but a lot of it was very slow. Far too long, far too much tedious background (I like history, but at some points this was like reading a text book), and a rather disappointing ending. If you want to read a good vampire book, Bram Stoker's Dracula is better by miles.
