Kafka on the Shore finished. Definite spoilers

I have to confess that my attitude to this book while reading it was all over the place. At times I was certain it was a five star book, and there were others (although rare) when I found the writing positively clumsy. The scene where Oshima reveals his true gender when confronted by the two women's rights activists fell squarely into this category, and part of the reason for this may be that Murakami does seem to have a problem writing female charac

I enjoyed this as much as 1Q84 even though it seems to have a lot of the same characters (under different names) in the same kind of world. And it's more compact. ...more

Reading this book was a challenge that I had given myself...about 3 years back! So, read it I did and am feeling accomplished having read it all..I couldnt understand it though...The language was not the issue, it is quite simple. But there are so many metaphors, I got the feeling of being in the magic room of mirrors..I would give a longish gap before picking up the next book by Murakami, case of processor overload!

Murakami's fluid prose and complex, inspired plots place them at the top of my list of books that can't be put down, marathon reading required. Also, like many of his other books, it's easy to be fooled by the ease with which you immerse in the plot, read at speed to the end, and thus, underestimate the story's depth. Don't make the mistake of believing you have grasped all its subtleties until you realize the story continues to intrigue you weeks after you've finished the book and moved on to a ...more
