We follow the stories of a 15 year old runaway boy and an old mentally disabled old man who whilst appeared not to have anything to do with each other are somehow linked. There are parts to the stories which are intriguing but most are just strange. This definitely would not be a book I’d recommend to my more conservative friends noting the sexual content & “Oedipean curse”. At the end, we are left to infer some conclusions & meanings for ourselves.

Kafka on the Shore is a story about love, prophecies and magical realism. The story revolves around two people - Kafka, a 15 year old disturbed runaway and Nakata, an aged outcast who can talk to cats. I really enjoyed this book. I found myself reading it late into the night and also when I had chances during the day.

The characters were fantastic, especially Nakata, and the story drew me in, exploring choices, destiny and finding oneself. The fantastical elements mixed seamlessly with the more realistic ones giving a rounded, wonderful read.

In planning to Japan, there are a few areas featured in here that I plan to visit, and having them featured was fun too!
