This was an interesting read so soon after reading The Kingdom of This World about revolution in Haiti, because this one is framed in a timescale that includes Trujillo’s bloody dictatorship on the other half of the same island in the Dominican Republic. Two very different books but there is a sense of something in common, perhaps just desperation.

I liked the story line overall and I really liked the chapters about Lola's and Beli's lives. The book is very raw and rough. It is not for sensitive readers. I did not like all the bad language. It could have been cut by half, or more, and still gotten the point across. Also the way the chapters were set up left me feeling disjointed and confused each time a new chapter came. I listened to the audiobook version and I'm not sure I would have finished it if I hadn't.
