I listened to the audiobook version, read by the author, and I really recommend it. His voice is perfect with the slow pace of the book. I suspect I might have been bogged down if I was reading, but listening is beautiful. So glad I finally got round to this one. It was well worth it.

There are two books in my reading history whose wide acclaim made me want to throw up. This was one of them. It's really not a bad book, but given the plethora of more deserving books I have to say that this was popular reading. Just that. Storytelling to the extreme and that's always commendable, but the closer it got to the end the more it fell apart. Less and less believable. There's a far superior book out there written in Appalachian style and that's "The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All"
