I really, really want to love this book but I just can't!
Sometime in the not so distant future, the world is overran with zombie. A town in the middle of the forest is oversaw by a bunch of Sisters, who preach salvation through hard work, marriage and dedication. But there's some secrets in the sisterhood and Mary is about to find them.

Cover: The cover makes me think in two different ways. Sometimes, looking at it makes me feel as if I'm on the Consecrated side looking into the village. At other times, I feel like I'm in the village looking out at the consecrated. This simple image can be interpreted differently.
Characters: The main characters of the book are Mary, Travis, Harry, Cass, Jed, and a young boy. Mary is a young woman who longs for something other than life in the village. She is sure that something exists beyond Th ...more

My first thought: hhmmm, like The Hunger Games with zombies.
Second thought: errr, I'm not quite sure I like these characters.
I didn't mind the story that much, in fact, I quite enjoy the last 1/4 of the book. The mystery and the occassional suspense made me read all the way to the end but I'm really not quite sure if I'd read the next book in the series although I am left with questions which I probably will not remember within the next 6 months or so. I think that basically describes how much o ...more

I do not read a lot of zombie books (like my husband), but I did find this book to be a interesting addition to the genre.
One of the best parts of this book was the fact that it did not follow the typical recipe for YA books when it came to the love triangle. It featured a female protagonist that did not follow the rules set for her and dared to dream... even when those around her wish that she would not.

The proportion of depression vs. hope in this book was a little too much for me. Apocalyptic stuff is never cheery. Doesn't "anyone" believe the world will get better ? I felt like this has a few similarities to The Hunger Games and was very reminiscent of Margaret Atwood stuff I have read. It also reminded me a bit of The City of Ember My favorite part of the story was Mary in the attic during the sequestering with Travis. I wish more of the novel was like that.

I absolutely loved this book and that is high praise from me for a dystopia genre book. This book has everything: zombies, a love story, deceit by those in authority, horror, escape and dreams for a different life. And Carrie Ryan takes all that and weaves a wonderful tale that satisfies while still being not quite what this reader hoped.
