Henry is an American who is serving in the Italian military during WWI. Being on the front line and close to the action, Henry witnesses first hand the devastation the war causes as he transports injured soldiers in an ambulance back to the hospitals. Catherine is a British nurse whom he meets and the two fall in love. Their relationship develops and becomes more serious as Henry recuperates in a hospital from an injury he suffered while at the front line. Catherine eventually becomes pregnant.

This is a novel that creeps up on you with every turn of the page as Hemingway builds the tension and anticipation of war and the confusion and desperation to cling to the slightest sense of humanity that comes with it. Hemingway writes from his own experiences creating a vivid and realistic story and characters that brings all aspects of the situation to life raising questions that are as relevant today as when Hemingway first set pen to paper. A great read that stands the test of time.

I am not sure why Ernest Hemmingway's work has been so lauded. This book was choppy, and the conversation was stilted and fake. As a memoir of his experiences, it was interesting. But, overall, not the best example of good writing.
