Henry is an American who is serving in the Italian military during WWI. Being on the front line and close to the action, Henry witnesses first hand the devastation the war causes as he transports injured soldiers in an ambulance back to the hospitals. Catherine is a British nurse whom he meets and the two fall in love. Their relationship develops and becomes more serious as Henry recuperates in a hospital from an injury he suffered while at the front line. Catherine eventually becomes pregnant.

I wish I could give books multiple ratings. I know I'll catch flak for this but I found the story to be just two stars. I think the most interesting part of it was the fact that much of it had been lifted from his real life experiences. And the deaths at the end just seemed like they were there for shock value. I'm sure an english major could point out all the meaning and symbolism that I missed but I read primarily for enjoyment, not analysis. I ended up rating the book based on what I enjoyed

I read this long, long, long ago. I remember liking it well enough for something that was assigned reading. It's really not fair to even give it a rating since I remember so little.
