I've been reading a lot of books from this time period and I can see why this was groundbreaking. It's definitely different from lots of crime books from the time. And I loved the ending!
Stanley Tucci's narration grew on me. I wasn't so sure about it at the beginning but after a while, I got used to the 'tough guy' style. It definitely fit the book.

Noir at its best. There's something so delicious about reading this kind of book. The audiobook is just under three hours, so can be heard in on long car ride or a couple of long walks. This book is everything I want from a book like this - passion that just appears from nowhere and derails the lives of the characters, nonchalant murder because why not knock the guy off, a detective determined to get the criminal, and a dark ending. This isn't a mystery -- the reader knows what's happening throu

I guess this kind of stuff just goes over my head. I'm not quite seeing why this book is so great. I don't get the title either. I heard this book was an influence for L'étranger. No wonder I didn't like it because I was never fond of that book either. I gave this two stars instead of one because I do like tragedies, and I liked Frank's sentiments at the very end, kinda bittersweet. Other than that, a blah, cold, emotionless book; I'm sure that's the point of the genre, but books like these are

This was an easy, fast paced read. The story definitely made me anxious-you just know things aren't going to end well for the characters. It's funny that this book was considered so scandalous when there is very little by way of graphic content. Maybe that was the problem, what was left to the imagination was just considered too dangerous.

A quick, eye-roll inducing read. Enter 1930s California and watch the love lust story of two really shitty people unfold. To be clear, Frank Chambers ain't shit and Cora Papadakis ain't shit. They are an epic train wreck of a couple. They are an epic train wreck I had trouble looking away from. My creeping need to follow this twisty shitshow of a story to it's end was vexing. On the flip side, it's kind of impressive that Cain was able to get me rooting for the demise of his characters so comple

Loved it! A fast read, but well plotted out and developed. It's amazing what he was able to accomplish in just a few pages!
