I'm going to DNF this from now. Originally I really liked it. I thought the premise was interesting even though I didn't care for all of the characters. But as time went by I started to lose interest. I think a huge part of the issue was timing. I started reading this at a time when I wasn't in the mood for it. I took a break from it, thinking that would make things go easier but instead it just made it even harder to connect with the story. I do think the protagonist in the more realistic setti ...more

This is one hell of a cool book. Gorgeously written and brilliantly conceived. I love all the literary and western cultural references, as well as the little mundane details of daily life that hint at ennui, sort of like Hemingway and Stieg Larsson. I may not have understood what was going on a lot of the time, and I may not generally enjoy the open-endedness associated with surrealism / magical realism. But 5 stars for style and pure originality.
