What Members Thought
Having read Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men and given this book's reputation, I had very high expectations however I was slightly disappointed. I found it very slow to start with and although the style of writing fits the story and the characters perfectly it did take some getting used to. Steinbeck has definitely capture the despair and desparation of 1930's America as the Joad family heads West in need of work, food and shelter after being removed from their land after defaulting on their loans as

Read this during a family summer cabin vacation and couldn't put it down. It helps, of course, that I've like all the Steinbeck I've read. But this is my fave. Just plain good historical tome fiction. Given its length, it may not be the best introduction to Steinbeck, bu it's certainly essential reading for lovers of American historical fiction.

Beautiful prose used to tell a very ugly part of the American story. This is my 4th reading of this book. This time I related and sympathized with Tom. I have a son in his late teens. I could see for the first time how very debilitating life for a young man must have been during this time period.The Joad's pregnant daughter was always a character that got lots of sympathy from me. I also can't imagine how devastating it must be for all children, even today, particularly in Syria, to be displaced
