For someone who doesn't read a lot of fantasy, I was completely taken by this book. It took me a little time to understand the world and how it worked, but I was so taken by Sabriel and her role as Abhorsen that I just couldn't put the book down. And then when we meet Mogget, the most awesome cat sidekick I think I've encountered in fiction so far (and so very, very CAT) I was hooked. This really grew on me as I read it. I'm not a great fan of books dealing with the dead; in fact, I avoid necromancers, zombies, and anything similar unless I've heard that they're very good. I have avoided this book for several years, because I thought of it as a children's book. I was wrong. Yes, it is a young adult fantasy...but, not just for young people.

In the process of making that journey, she grows into her own strength and responsibilities. This is a story about doing the hard thi

A refreshingly different fantasy than the norm. Sabriel is an exciting read with a few core characters you become quickly attached too, though you've only just begun to know them. A strong female fantasy character that doesn't give in to many of the pitfalls others male-written female characters in fantasy.

And cat side-kick? Mogget rules! though ironically another book I read at the same time had one, so it was strange to see two after never seeing one before. Being a cat person who loves kick
