This is a pretty well-written fairy tale retelling, with strong hints of Narnia. 12-year-old David steps through a portal in his garden and leaves behind World War 2 and his unhappy relationship with his new stepbrother for a world of magic and fantasy. I thought the prose was nice here, but the actual plot is a bit simplistic. I read this book about a couple of years ago when my husband was having surgery. I basically read it in one day, and have since recommended it to friends and family. It's creative and well written.
A really unique take on the traditional coming of age tale, this book is kind of like Narnia, but darker, and definitely a story for adults.
