Wow, what can I say? It definitely lives up to the hype.

After having been recommended by so many GR friends, I finally decided to pick this book up. I choose the audiobook format, something I usually do when its a first person narrative, and to my luck, the narrator gave a fabulous performance.

I was riveted as I followed Katniss' adventure, both scared and appalled at the things she had to go through in order to survive. I cried over Rue's death, and giggled at some of the silly banter she had w

i started reading this book at 9:30 this morning. i read throughout my work day (to the great neglect of my actual work) and including about a two-hour break, i was done by 7:15pm. i could not stop. i think this book is great because it manages to do three things simultaneously : tell a good story, keep a good pace with the action, and be easily and instantaneously relatable to its audience. doing one of these things might be difficult to a less adept author; collins does all three very well. ka ...more

2025 Re-read. It still holds up.

I had never heard of this book until it was chosen for bookclub so I had absolutely no expectations. I was totally sucked in by the story of Katniss and the Hunger Games, a kind of dystopian reality show where the only way to win is to kill all the other competitors. Collins has created a truly frightening world-I'm so glad there are more books in the series.

This book grabbed me by the throat and demanded that I read it over two days. I dreamed about it during the night in between. I woke up in the middle of the next night still thinking about it. The story isn't new: a dystopian society where, to entertain the masses, children are pitted in a fight to the death reality show. But the details of the story still felt compelling -- the training details, the attention to costuming, the thoughts of a contestant who grew up watching the shows.

I'm glad tha

I was a little cautious going into this book. For the most part, I tend to veer away from young-adult novels. The subject matter and writing isn't really my cup of tea but a number of people have recommended this book and assured me that 'it isn't just a young-adult novel'. I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised. The premise was decent, the characters were fairly interesting and the writing didn't have me cringing every few seconds. I think the thing that I enjoy most about the ...more

I was on the wait list for a long time for this book, and it was one of the few books that was worth the wait. In the country of Panem, what's left of North America, the government exerts control over its popular through the annual "Hunger Games," a fight to the death by kids from every district selected from a lottery. Katniss volunteers to go in the place of her younger sister and the book is her journey in the hunger games. Collins does a fantastic job of exploring how Katniss struggles to su ...more
