Henry James is one of my favorite, and most difficult, writers. Washington Square is rather amazingly easy to read but is no less Jamesian for that. I was amused by the interfering, naive aunt, annoyed by the tyrannical father, cheered by the heroine's eventual self-determination, and enchanted as ever by James' overabundant style.
