Henry James is one of my favorite, and most difficult, writers. Washington Square is rather amazingly easy to read but is no less Jamesian for that. I was amused by the interfering, naive aunt, annoyed by the tyrannical father, cheered by the heroine's eventual self-determination, and enchanted as ever by James' overabundant style.

Catherine is a wealthy heiress who is being courted by Morris Townsend, who may or may not just want her money. In my opinion, the story line is fairly boring. The writing is truly exceptional. As I read it, I found myself writing down words to better understand their meaning.
My first experience with Henry James - and it won't be my last.
