What Members Thought

The thing about this book is that I really did not like it. It was really disappointing because there was so much here in terms of topics to be mined. But everything was treated very superficially and it didn't feel like a thoughtful, serious, or compassionate look into anything at all.
I don't even know where to start. So I'm going to start with the first notes I took at the beginning...
- "Men had no idea what it was like to be a mother. The ache of loving a child, even when he had moved on." Mm ...more

What will be the impetus for a person to shuck all he/she knows and is comfortable with, although not happy with, in order to discover what is really important is his/her life and who he/she really is? For one who is settled, however discontentedly, in life and is well over the wandering age of youth to embark upon the unknown is not the stuff of which self-discovery tales are made. Someone should have told that to Harold Fry, who in his mid-sixties unwittingly sets out on a 600+ mile journey to

There comes a time when you just want a cheesy book. But it can't just be cheesy, it has to be "good" cheesy. And The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry just oozed with all the gooey, cheesiness that I didn't know I was looking for.
The book is about a 60-something-yo Harold Fry, who decided to take a 500-mile walk (if I remember correctly) after receiving a letter from a dying old friend Queenie Hennessy, and self-discoveries as he's embarking on the pilgrimage to see Queenie.

We're all on that proverbial journey with Harold. In some philosophical way, this reminded me of The Things They Carried. Excellent read!

My BookClub choice for April 2013. We did not agree on the likability of Harold. By the end of book we were just tired of his 'sweetness' and wished he would just get mad and move along from the slackers. We all agreed that this was an excellent read with lots of discussion.

Super sweet. Harold's just out there walking, walking and remembering, remembering and thinking. Harold's figuring out who he was, who he is, who he wants to be, and whether there's still enough time to get there.
