Brilliant and disturbing and oh man, can this guy do voices. Scary look at class and keeping up with the Joneses and American cluelessness and the ways in which people both fool ourselves and sometimes manage to be heroic.

If you like Kurt Vonnegut, you will probably enjoy George Saunders. Saunders' works frequently feature a somewhat dystopian future. You are taken into a facility where mood-altering drugs are being tried out on prisoners. There are quite a few stories that feature the haves vs. the have-nots. A struggling antique-store owner takes vengeance on a well-to-do realtor at a local charity benefit; an upper-middle class mom visits a poor family in hopes of getting her children a puppy; a father describ ...more

At first, I didn't like this book at all. Smartass stuff, I sniffed. Put it down. Picked it up again a few days later. Hmmm. Ended up liking it. Sorta. Two of the stories I'd read before, Tenth of December and The Semplica Girl Diaries. They must have been in the New Yorker. Escape from Spiderhead I just could not get through. So my verdict on the book as a whole? Interesting perhaps, but I'll not seek out his work again. ...more

Short stories are not something that I seek out often but for Books on the Nightstand summer Bingo I will give a new (to me)author a try. The first 5 stories of the book are all I need to finish the "read 10 short stories" square. If I continue with the book after that I must be hooked.... (To be continued) ...more
