Available at LibriVox. What a splendid book, I prefer it compared with The Woman in White.

An early mystery...I really struggled getting into it.

I never expected to have so much fun with this book as I had. Great fun! It deserves a better review than just a note, and I might still write it when I have more time and inspiration. For now I just wanted to mention that the character Gabriel Betteredge will have his name on my personal pantheon of memorable characters. I am looking forward to reading more Wilkie Collins, I think The Woman in White will be next. ...more

What a strange book...

I started with an open mind... read a little and thought of ending my relationship with it... I carried on and actually started to enjoy it ... quite a bit actually... and then - all of a sudden - I started to dislike it again.... yet I finished it and have to say that it really was no more than simply OK.

I'm struggling to give it a decent review... it was simply too full of stuff and nonesense... yet at the same time was a little intriguing... but still not quite enough to

Reading The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins. The Moonstone This is my Book Club choice for September. I'm cheating and using Schmoop for Chapter Synopsis as I read along, and skip through it. I already know the thief (Wikipedia), but I find that helps me read along and catch the clues. But there aren't any that I can find. Not a good choice for a summer read, especially if vacation is Wildwood Jersey Shore. My next stop is one of the Victorian Groups in Goodreads, just so I can understand why reade ...more

Pretty good mystery book, given when it was written. The story engaged me throughout, though the pace was a bit too slow for my taste.

An interesting, well-told mystery from the friend of Dickens. In fact, I believe the first English detective novel. Collins weaves a wonderful tale.

Takes a while to get into, but the greatest fun is where the plot intersects with the modern world (like Miss Clack and her Christian pamphlets).
