The Lost Generation. Paris. The 1920's. Starving writer. Wife. Baby Bumby. Cafés. Hunger is good discipline. Possibly every wannabe writer's Bible, this book is as romantic as the City of Lights itself. I took it as a Fodor's guide when I visited the Left Bank and walked the haunts of Ernie and Hadley (OK, and Bumby and F. Puss). Cool. Really cool. ...more

this is the 2nd time i read this with the first time being 20 yrs ago. i really enjoyed it probably cause since my last reading i have read bios of gertrude stein,f scott fitzgerald. hem tells funny stories about these interesting writers and others. he tells the story while looking back 40 yrs on his memories. i wish i had more non fiction of hem s to read. i shall look for them. his life was more interesting than his fiction although i have enjoyed some of short stories lately. tell me if you

Of Hemingway's novels, I have only read FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS and THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA. I thought both were very fine works. A MOVEABLE FEAST did not impress me. I found it extremely self-centered and full of name dropping. His descriptions of Ezra Pound and F Scott Fitzgerald were the most interesting; and I really enjoyed his account of his Austrian vacation, skiing and hiking in the mountains with his wife, Hadley. It's been a while since I've read any Hemingway, but I've always loved his clean prose. Here we get a more intimate portrait of him as a writer, a husband, and a father, and the prose is messier--he died before he finished writing it. I was surprised by the vulnerability that seems to suffuse this account of his time in Paris. Perhaps that reveals more about me as a reader than Hemingway as a writer.
