Ursala goes through successive, multiple alternative lives, a plot structure that initially struck me as a gimmick. However, it is a terrific method of showing how Ursala evolved over her multiple deaths and rebirths, learning how to survive various obstacles that fate throws in her way. The detail in the novel is heartbreaking and profoundly moving--Britain really hung on by the skin of its teeth during WWII. I admired the "stiff upper lip" Ursala and others exhibited during those harrowing war ...more
