What Members Thought

It's a good book and well written, and I'd almost give it four stars--but I don't know, not quite. The short of it: Hadley Richardson is Ernest Hemingway's first wife. This is the story of how they get together and fall apart. I'm never really in the mood to read about love gone awry, so this probably wasn't a very good choice. I'm also not a huge fan of Hemingway. I also never like stories when love goes awry because the man just has to pursue his art, his greatness, his ego--other people be da

Really??? This is a best seller? Really!
While waiting for the St. Louis Book Fair to open last weekend I chatted with a very nice retired couple. He likes Civil War books and Harry Potter, she likes Brittish mysteries and naval stories. They asked me what I like, Hemingway. The woman wrinkled her nose at this, as most women in my experience tend to do. I know. I understand. I did not find a great deal of sympathy within myself for Hemingway, but the writer provided deepl

I enjoyed this book. Probably because I've always been fascinated with the world of the painters and writers in Paris between the wars. It's serviceably written. Nothing spectacular, but nothing awkward either. Always did think Ernest Hemingway was a macho prick doubtful of his masculinity. However, I'm glad it's my friend who paid for the hardcover and not me.

A fun, light read. That said, I was ANNOYED by the main character. She was so freaking weak, until the bitter end. Reviews of this book describe Hemmingway as the most interesting character in the book. They are right. That said, it was fun to know more about Hadley, Hemmingway's first wife and the mother of his son Bumbey.
