I was dying to read this, if only for the elegance of the title. What a disappointment. I’m giving up fairly early in the book. The only thing worse than being lectured to by an improbably learned, but overbearing and self-satisfied concierge is being lectured to by an insufferable kid. Gack.
Take an apartment building in a desirable arrondissement in Paris. Add an autodidact concierge with attitude; a precocious, judgmental 12 year old with a plan to commit early suicide; a sophisticated Japanese gentleman; and an author with rigidly deterministic views of class and politics; and what do you get?
