I read this book prior to seeing the movie, and on the recommendation of a coworker, who always has great recommendations. I loved it. Hook, line and sinker. I loved the structure of the book, the direct and indirect connections between the characters, all of it.
HORRIBLE!!!!!! Why does everyone like this book?! Not good. The "interesting weaving of characters" is absolutely predictable. I cannot believe I wasted 2 weeks of my life reading this atrocity.

Six stories taking place in the past an into the future--from the early 1800 Pacific Island British exploration an settlement to post-apocalyptic Hawaii. The stories are loosely tied together by spirit, place, individuals, and the records they leave.
An amazing achievement, with different dialects and societies. I would love to read an entire novel taking place in Sonmi-451's future Korea, a fascinating and scary dystopian society.

If this book hadn't been chosen for a book club, I would never have touched it - this sort of artsy and clever writing is normally not my thing at all. That said, this one works, particularly the sci-fi dystopia and Luisa Rey sections. Give it a spin and see what you think.
