Wow!

It is so unusual that I like an illustrious award winner. Usually my response is "What did the judges see in this book?" the Sense of an Ending breaks that chain. This slim volume captivate me from the beginning. The chronology progresses swiftly from pre-university to retirement with the main character reflecting on happenings of 40 years previously. Something I find myself doing now that I'm the same age as Tony.

If you are one to read the ending before the beginning, you will spoil this bo

Women will want to slap this guy silly. You know the type. You think that behind the quiet exterior lies a man with real depth. You assume he’s quiet because he’s pondering soulful truths but really he’s quiet because he’s afraid to articulate what’s on his mind, most likely because he’s never had the courage to examine and challenge his own beliefs and rationalizations. His lack of intimacy with himself mirrors his inability to be intimate with others.

Tony had always held such high regards for Adrian. He wouldn't dare agree with his mom that Adrian "was too clever. If you're that clever you can argue yourself into anything. You just leave common sense behind." But he didn't know what to t

Free: library kindle loan. A very short book, 176 pages, I read it in its entirety in one morning. Which must mean I liked it. Still, I'm not willing to give it five stars. ...more

I enjoyed this a lot. Strong parallels between this book and The Good Soldier. Also ties in nicely with Old Filth. But in my opinion, Barnes does a much better job and with nice brevity compared to Gardam.

I am looking forward to the discussion of this one on CR here next month.

Definitely want to try some more Barnes in 2012.
