This book greatly exceeded my expectations. I picked it up for a GR discussion group, but feared it would be depressing and lifeless. Wrong, wrong. The characters are alive and 3-dimensional, even the potentially stereotypical couple who maintain the house and grounds for the family. The writing is lovely but does not overwhelm the story and characters it serves -- no self-indulgent over-writing here.
