Somehow I have never read Borges, perhaps because I studied French, Italian, and history in school. And everyone I knew who studied Spanish read him and dreaded it. I actually found this very interesting--but I can only imagine how difficult it would be for a student of Spanish reading the original.

I really enjoyed these stories and am so glad to have finally tackled Borges. His writing can be tough: dense, lots to process and think about, history, philosophy, politics, all rolled into a whole lotta something! Some stories I really loved, Death and The Compass and The Secret Miracle, were my favorites. I also thought Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, The Babylon Lottery and The Garden of Forking Paths were outstanding. And the rest were impressive, although not exactly my cup of tea. It is very ...more

It's not that I didn't like the book. I can see why Borges is called "magical mind" by some. His imagination is fantastic. I just couldn't get into the book; one because I normally don't like short stories, and another because the stories were too complex for my simple mind.
