Do you want to read about herding cattle for 400 pages? Do you want students to hate literature? Because assigning this book about herding cattle for 400 pages is how you make students hate literature. I'm an adult and a librarian yet reading this book was a chore. I liked the story and the bits of history thrown in to it. The characters were more or less cardboard cutouts of the population of the evolving Florida through the time encompassed. This was roughly Civil War through modern times. It wasn't great literature, but it was an interesting story. I'm glad I read it, and I would recommend it t anyone with an interest in Florida's history.

Overall a good story for generations of Floridians. The language is a bit stiff but you get used to it after you become involved with the characters. It probably has more meaning to those who live in Florida or were born here and like history.
