It was nice to re-read this epic. It is quite a compelling read even though 2000 years old or so. It is supposedly the first novel. Anyway, the edition translated by Rouse keeps the language basic and easy to understand, unlike other versions.

New to teaching freshmen, I sought my colleagues' advice on which edition to order for my students (having only read Fagels, myself). They mostly said Lombardo, citing his accessibility, so I checked him out.

The names, alone, were enough to put me off of Lombardo and root me firmly in Team Fagels. I don't care if the translated names in Lombardo ARE closer to the orginal Greek -- no student of mine is going to go around calling Circe "Kirke."

The very idea.

I would rather watch the movie with Kirk Douglas (which frankly followed the book quite well).

The story of Ulysses and his long, adventurous travels.

This translation is sooooooooooooo good. Better by far than any other of sampled. I also got to hear Lombardo read from it live. THAT was awesome.
