Shelves: fiction
I don't give five stars unless a book is exceptional. I give four stars often, three is lukewarm and when it comes to two or one I probably couldn't finish it. This book is exceptional. It has characters that you grow to love (or hate) and it has drama, mystery and humor throughout It is fiction but it tells a very real story almost with the atmosphere of relating a fable. Do yourself a favor and read it.

3.5 McBride colorfully shares the story of the interconnectedness of the Jewish and Black families of the Chicken Hill neighborhood of Pottstown, PA. The novel begins with a body being found, but it takes a whole lot of scene-setting, introduction of characters, and moving pieces for that plot to return. While I mostly enjoyed all the digressions, there were perhaps a few too many contrivances required to tie all these pieces together.

This book only grabbed me toward the end. All these characters to keep straight in my head I took notes.
