4.5 stars. Why not 5? Maybe I will change it, but I feel a bit unsatisfied by the book wrapping up despite very little being finished. I kind of hope she might write a follow-up in the future, because how could she finish a modern-day novel about indigenous issues in the Midwest, COVID, police brutality/racism (especially in Minneapolis), and independent bookstores when all of these issues are currently ongoing? I’m so bummed. I really wanted to love this, but I just couldn’t get into the groove. It seems it was at once too much and not enough - too many themes and not enough depth. I am keeping the list of book recommendations, though!

I do wonder where Louise Erdrich had been all of my life. I think that I stay away form certain writers because I have built up such high expectations of them that I am afraid they will never be able to live up to it. But this book blew me away. I cried and cried.

I did not know how deeply the past year with Covid 19 and the death of George Flyod had affected me, until Louise Erdrich put into words so much of what I felt. I should start a shelf in Goodreads for books that punched me in the heart,
