What Members Thought

This a rich, complex, beautifully written novel by a great American writer. Why only three stars? Chalk it up to personal preferences I guess. For me the symbolism is too heavy handed. I found the fairy-tale motif a bit too hokey. A northern black man goes south in search of a pot of gold. Instead he uncovers the mythical and concrete roots of his family, a discovery that is gold of a different kind. This is a good book that simply did not grab me.

i wish all books were as good & immensely readable & aesthetically precise as this one.
