What Members Thought

It’s not often you look forward to Demons, but in this case, I was. All the sterling reviews on Goodreads! The fortuitous link to my favorite Dickens novel (David Copperfield)! The promise of one of my favorite genres, coming-of-age!
Alas, it was not to be. At least not for me.
It fell into that category of book that for some reason bothers me. The plot’s the thing, and we all love a good story. As for Kingsolver, she’s certainly capable of telling it. Trouble is, she told way more than I like. No ...more

I realize that this book did not work for everyone, but it worked for me.
Some reviewers talk about cliches in the narrative, but I only saw social problems that are so inherent to our communities that they do become cliches.
At times the narrative became Kafkaesque, to the point that I had to leave the reading for a while, but the characters and story aways drew me back.
I want to push this book on everyone.

Justly praised everywhere. Typically described, including by Kingsolver, as inspired by and patterned after Dickens’ David Copperfield, it is, like the other the author’s portrait of the horrifying underbelly of the society of the times. In this case, poverty, crime, addiction, family breakup, ignorance and the failure of a wealthy nation to care for those most in need.
The brilliance of the novel lies with Kingsolver’s mastery of character and dialogue.

the theme isn’t my cup-of-tea, but what a story and what a writing. and can’t forget the narration. the book just took me on a journey, the ups and downs of all emotions. just superb. it should have been classified as non-fiction, as it probably mirrors a lot of real lives.
