Such a must read! It’s very difficult to read, at times, but it’s a beautiful book. One of my first questions was why it was so different from Hillbilly Elegy, which I stopped reading after a few chapters. They both cover some of the worst aspects of Appalachia, but I think the salient differences are that 1) Barbara Kingsolver loves the place and the people, 2) she’s an excellent writer.

The best book I have read in such a long time. Her knowledge of the setting and the culture and the insights into the characters ( both psychologically and in terms of society) puts this onto the outstanding shelf of books. It doesn’t falter. And then there are the drugs and the way OxyContin worms it’s way into the life of Demon. Really a creative book - not one for a warm cozy read but all the same one not to be missed.

Made it halfway through. It’s not the book, it’s me. I haven’t read David Copperfield in a long time so I missed all the parallels. And from my perspective, I’m just not a fan of reading books about the misery of others. I don’t need to visit the land of cotton candy and unicorns, I but I don’t need to hear that people lead harsh lives without some other message.

Embarrassingly, missed that this was a retelling of David Copperfield. Heartbreaking at times leavened a bit by Demon's humorous commentary
