I'm old enough to remember WWII, and living in California, was aware of the Japanese internment. I never thought specifically of the racism between the Chinese and the Japanese in this country, but it seems an obvious outcome from the war once you stop to think about it.
This book could have been very, very good, with its exploration of prejudice, racism and first and second generation differences. I'm sure that if Ford continues to write, though, he'll look back at this book and cringe, it is so ...more

Sometimes books take a while to get revved up, but when we let them get warm in our hands and settle us into our seats, we find gems in the pages. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford is one of those books.

I really enjoyed this book - probably a 4.5 star. The main character is a Chinese American man in his 50s and the story alternates between his life in 1986 and his life in 1942. During the war years, he became very close to a Japanese American girl his age. The story is about his relationships with her, his parents (who have a strong hatred of the Japanese because of the Japanese invasion of China), and the greater Seattle area.
