Top notch. Now that I've finished, I'm already lonely for it. Forget the book called Norwegian Wood -- this is the real deal, written by an actual Norwegian who happens to be a writer's writer.

I loved the wonderful, descriptive writing in this book, like being carried along on a deluge of well-wrought words. Although this is a novel I found it rather episodic, more like a series of interconnected short stories. It really pulled me in but ended up feeling a bit empty at the core, which may have been intentional since that would also describe the main protagonist, who seemed to have held a small vacant spot inside all of his life without any desire to fill it. Sometimes, you're grateful that an author doesn't care so much about what happens in his story but instead focuses on making you feel - plot-driven is everywhere, but the successful novel of mood and characterization is a tough trick to land. Thankfully, Petterson handles the challenge with aplomb - Trond's modest reflections prompt the same contemplation in the reader in a very pleasing way.
