Lucy Barton is such a fascinating character whom we know from an earlier story and a novel by Strout. Here she is at her neurotic best, over-thinking things and trying to help other people understand what's going on. This is truly a voice-driven novel with, it must be said, a pretty thin plot. So read it for Lucy's voice and her character and don't worry about what's happening. ...more

It is hard to imagine a divorced couple getting along as well as Lucy and William do. Yet, I am aware of other ex-couples who maintain friendships. William doesn't strike me as the most empathetic individual and Lucy is incredibly patient. It is a thoughtful story. ...more

Introspective. It feels very intimate. Lucy surprises herself and us with her musings. At the end she says” we are all mysteries. This may be the only thing in the world I know to be true.”
