What Members Thought

The first fifty pages were difficult and confusing as Doerr sets up his characters, their time periods, and the structure of the book which goes back and forth in time from the 15th century to the present and into the future. I almost quit at that point but his writing is so clear, his characters so engaging and the story so interesting that I pressed on.

How can I even rate or review this book?!? Two and a half stars, rounded to three because it stuck the landing?
I thought for awhile this one was going to be moved to my "perpetually slogging through" shelf. But praise be, it's done!
I started this book so many times. I was one of the first to get my hands on it when it came in at the library because it SEEMS like something I'd enjoy. But I just couldn't get through the first 25% no matter how many times I renewed or rechecked it out. I finally ch ...more

I absolutely think this book is amazing. And, I have to admit, it is one of the most challenging books I've read in a long time. I was trying to finish it by the time a library book club discussed it. I didn't quite finish, but the conversation spurred me to read the last hundred pages.
