What a magnificent book, it really deserves a 6 stars rating!
This is a multi-layered story where the author describes Toru's adventures. If they are real or not, it doesn't matter.
Among the many chronicles written there and intertwined with the main plot, Murakami also mentions the legacy of Japan in World War II.
This is certainly Murakami's masterpiece since he makes uses of several literary resources such as: letters, flashbacks, internet chats, newspaper stories and so on.

Murakami could do with a better editor. I’ve enjoyed two of his books (Kafka and Norwegian Wood) before this one. I enjoyed this one as well, but the others were more satisfying in a way that is hard to define. This is an extraordinary book and one can appreciate why it won the Yomiuri Prize. However, some of its interludes drag to the point that they become somewhat tedious. Worth picking up even if you're not the type who normally goes for post-modern fiction. What I love about Murakami is that he captures the weirdness and the amorphous quality of highbrow fiction but makes it deeply accessible - he has no pretenses or desire to play the "I'm Smarter Than You" game. Instead, you just get something that's beautiful, lovely, and changes the way you think about your own life a little bit.
