It's The Plot Against America by Philip Roth! But written half a century before The Plot!
This is a real gem, though seldom talked of - it portrays ahistorical transcendental human folly and should feel relevant to a reader In 2013. Habeas Schmabeas!

I picked this one up because a review noted that, though written in 1935, many of the themes resonate today with our current presidential regime (of which I am not a fan). Sinclair Lewis is a wry satirist who was very controversial in his day.
