Don't quite know where to begin with this one. What a difficult, lovely puzzle of a book!
Their Eyes Were Watching God is a really vibrant novel, full of colorful characters and humor and life.
At the same time, a difficult book, documenting a difficult time in American history. It's all here - racism, patriarchy, domestic violence, Jim Crow laws, you name it. These oppressive systems are deeply internalized by the main characters.

This audiobook read by Ruby Dee is among the top 5 best audiobooks I've experienced. I listened to it on cassettes about 15 years ago, one of the first audiobooks I tried. At the time, I was mesmerized, totally forgot that Ruby Dee was doing the performance and simply saw each character in my mind.
