Marvelous, introspective look at a family that starts as four then becomes two - a mother and her daughter. The young girl is very involved with her religion and faith but what happens to that as life happens and she ages. A lot to think about. I think I want to read it again already.

A painful and intimate mother/daughter journey filled with shame, isolation and despair and thankfully arriving at acceptance, connection and redemption. Even the Ensure-addicted mouse with the limp finds relief.

This was a tough read for me, having a mom with depression who is presently undergoing dementia and other health challenges that are taking her further away from me. Yet there were moments in this book that were so perfect, where Gyasi's writing was so spot-on truthful that I had to pause and take a deep breath and sit with that I had just read. This story of addiction and depression and its impact on a young member of an immigrant family from Ghana just had too many threads and too many flips back and forth in time to fully engage me.
