Widely considered a classic, I read it as part of the NY Times book club. It concerns a young black boy who starts out on a very promising path out of the misery of black life in the American south. He literally fights his way to the education the will be his ticket only to be beaten back and derailed by the relentless forces lined up against him. This book too me a long time to get through. I think its a great book for in depth discussion, maybe in a college English class or a really good book club group.
