The protagonist of this one is so introverted that reading about her made me feel as if I were underwater.
Probably the most philosophical of the Austen novels, tackling the thorny question of influence: is it ever ethical to exert one's influence on another? Is a resolute character more moral than a persuadable one?

What can be said that hasn’t been said. Brilliant romantic social satire with themes of time, equality, the navy, persuasion, society’ norms. The language is often convoluted and some sentences goon seemingly forever but that serves to set the tone of society at that time.
Get the Oxford version. It has and excellent introduction and appendices including the first ending before a subsequent revision.

My father is fond of saying that chick lit authors are forever doomed because Jane Austen took all the good plots, and I don't think he's far off the mark. Austen definitely set the tone for the romantic comedy of manners and it's a testament to her skill in capturing that delicate dance that her work continues to endure.

Girl likes boy, relatives don't. Boy makes good, relatives mostly like the boy. Girl meets another boy who really wants her. She still looks at the other boy. Accidents befall other women suitors. If I tell you any more I will ruin the ending.

I shouldn't have taken this long to read this book, but I kept putting it down to read others which were about to be due at the library. I think that I will get even more out of a second reading. Three daughters in this family, the youngest married, the oldest homely and vain and hopeful, and the middle long in love with a man she refused at a family friend's insistence since the soldier's income is not seen to be adequate to maintain her lifestyle.
