What can be said that hasn’t been said. Brilliant romantic social satire with themes of time, equality, the navy, persuasion, society’ norms. The language is often convoluted and some sentences goon seemingly forever but that serves to set the tone of society at that time.
Get the Oxford version. It has and excellent introduction and appendices including the first ending before a subsequent revision.

My father is fond of saying that chick lit authors are forever doomed because Jane Austen took all the good plots, and I don't think he's far off the mark. Austen definitely set the tone for the romantic comedy of manners and it's a testament to her skill in capturing that delicate dance that her work continues to endure.

Of all the Jane Austen books that I've read, this one I found to be the least captivating. True, it is in the classic Austen style and yes, the storyline is mildly compelling. But, the plot and to some degree the characters so closely mirror her other novels, that I found myself wanted to reread Sense & Sensibilities or Pride and Prejudice rather than Persuasion.
