I just finished Jane Austin’s brilliant novel Persuasion. I think I read this many years ago, but remembered so little that it might as well have been a first read.
This is a closely observed character study of different members of the landed gentry related by blood, social standing, and common experience. It is subtle, nuanced, and sensitive. I would say it is the least humorous of her novels, but serious and instructive as to human nature which she shows by action rather than description.

Of all the Jane Austen books that I've read, this one I found to be the least captivating. True, it is in the classic Austen style and yes, the storyline is mildly compelling. But, the plot and to some degree the characters so closely mirror her other novels, that I found myself wanted to reread Sense & Sensibilities or Pride and Prejudice rather than Persuasion.
