I actually haven't read that much Jane Austen, at least not as a real adult. I think I read Pride and Prejudice in my undergrad days; and in the last few years I read a modern retelling that was fun. And of course I've seen some movies. But the audiobook came up as a freebie on Audible and I needed something far removed from the modern world this week. and it was satisfying! Oddly enough, I found this Austen to be one of the darkest in tone. I believe it was one of her later works (maybe even her last completed novel?) and her growth as an author and a woman of the time is evident in the theme. A woman declines a proposal in her early twenties from the one man the she loves and we, as readers, pick up eight years later where she is still unmarried and at that time, that age was beyond "marriageable" material.

I think this is the first Austen book I’ve read on paper, as opposed to listening to it. I find the reading slow going and had to underline quite a bit, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! I love Anne’s character and the way she thinks. The book wasn’t too long, making it a good introduction to Austen, I think.
