I have conflicting feelings about this book. On the one hand, it deserves its place as a classic if only for the author's keen sense of observation and way with words. She also had a sense of humor...Sylvia Plath, who knew!!

I first read this book decades ago. I don't think I liked it then, but I was young. Now that I've experienced my own issues with my mental health, I relate. I was more empathic towards the author and the protagonist and her life struggles. ...more

While often cast as a book about mental illness (and it is certainly that), what appeals to me about this one is the everywoman quality of Esther's anxieties - even as she spirals into a place most of us fortunately avoid, her essential humanity holds the novel together.
